知道一件事就是大概听说过，对一件事有印象。了解一件事是对细节非常详细的知道。知道某个人是听说过他，了解某个人是和他非常熟悉，对他的性格、为人非常清楚。

在中文语境中，大部分时候是可以互换的。但是通常情况下，“我了解”后面不接一个句子。一般只是用：我了解她，我了解这个情况。 而“我知道”则都可以用。
