Automated is a verb which means to make a process independent of human intervention. Automatic is an adjective or a noun that describes anything that works independently.
"The car wash automated its processes. Now, it is totally automatic." means "Previously, the car wash had human attendants but after installing new machinery, it is now totally machine operated with no attendants."
"Breathing is automatic." means "Breathing is not controlled by your conscious thought. It is involuntary."

A procedure or process working without human intervention is called "automated". For example, the assembly line was automated last year using robots. Machines that work without intervention are also called automatic, but the word also refers to something that happens without conscious thought. In the United States, in the case of the president's death, the vice-president automatically assumes that role.
