What does it mean? A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. I think it means we can't achieve our dreams and goals if we don't try. Maybe it is also about the importance of having some qualities such as courage, determination and self-confidence. If we are not courageous enough, we won't be able to take the right decision that will change our life or ensure a better future. Am I right?

Diamond, thank you for the question. The proverb is a motivational one. It means that even the most seemingly difficult of achievements, began with something small and highly possible. Our psychological programming will determine if we succeed or fail in anything, but as another proverb says, "If you don't try, you're guaranteed to fail". Imagine wanting to look at the stunningly beautiful, panoramic views from a mountaintop, it could be something you would like to do, take photographs of the clouds which seem endless in the beautiful blue sky, you would feel privileged to witness the awesome beauty of God's work. But you're standing at the bottom of the mountain, looking up, it's very big, much bigger than you or I, your brain starts to say it's impossible. You feel sadness because of how much you'd love to see the view from the top, and get those photographs. But the reality is, it's only your mind which is stopping you from getting to the top of the mountain, because the truth, the actual reality is that the journey to the top would begin with one step. It's a metaphor, for anything you'd like to achieve in your life, no matter how impossible it may seem at the time. "Whatever it is that you want to do, begin." That's why I'm on italki.com - I like helping people to learn English. X

It means you have to get off your ass and take at least one step forward. I think the meaning is pretty obvious.

You are indeed. One has to start from somewhere. Steps will follow one after another. Then you'll look and see you have reached where you've always wanted to be. But you also know, the start is the hardest part.

Yes, it means that the biggest projects we can take on all begin with the decision to be brave enough to take that first step. A good example would be the quote from the first moon landing: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." By taking that first step on the moon, makind advanced to places previously unknown. By advancing into this unknown territory with the single step on the moon, countless possibilities for the advancement of mankind opened up.

Yes. It is mean you need star. No matter what you do, nothing will happen unless you take the first step, i mean if you do not start.
