what's the meaning of "take an edge-of-the-seat ride"

If you're relaxed, you sit back into your seat. If you're tense, you might sit forward at the front edge of your seat. So, if you are frightened while riding in a car with a reckless driver, you can say you took an edge-of-the-seat ride. I've heard it more commonly as "edge-of-my-seat."
