Although these both refer to personal theft, they are still different in certain ways. It's not a case of one being more common than the other - you should be able to understand and use both.

Rob is a much broader term for theft while mug is commonly used when it happens to you in person on the street.
The word mug can also have several other meanings that has nothing to do with theft.
The word rob is more centred around illegal actions and theft.
