Oh! A tricky one! Save and preserve are synonyms, often used interchangeably by native speakers.
To save is to keep something from harm or to rescue it from danger (a very simplistic definition). To preserve means to keep something in its current state.
For example, you can save a historic building from being demolished (rescue it from danger) and preserve its interior (keep it in its current state).
Does that help?
