'to go to great lengths' is an idiom which means to try very hard to achieve an aim, sometimes even to the point of where it hurt you or someone else. The sentence is referring to this type of 'length'. Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that 'no amount of trying is too much' when protecting his family.
