What is the difference between "I believe and I think"? What is the difference between "I believe and I think"? in the way that we want to give an opinion. For example. I believe they are coming. In these examples they are synonyms, with the same functional meaning. However, "think" generally means to hold an idea in one's mind and "believe" often has a more specific meaning of "trust" or "have faith in" I am thinking about you = I hold an image of you in my mind I believe you = I trust you / I have faith in you
