The restaurant's PA system had begun paging the crew members of both 707's. The Colonel had repeated urgently, "Who?" She had shaken herself briskly. "President Kennedy," she had said and rung up the sale.

ring up a sale When you buys something, take it to the cashier, the cashier "rings up the sale." In the old days cash machines would ring out when the total was given and the tray ejected. Hence the use of "ring up."
