When you 'learn about' about something you have to study and find out facts.
Example:
1.Teacher to class:
Today we are going to learn about a famous English writer called William Shakespeare.
When you 'learn of' something you have been told about an event or you have found out information by chance.
Example:
2.Oh no, I have just learned of Nelson Mandela being close to death.
