"A counter-swirl" had caught Farquhar and turned him half round; he was again looking into the forest on the bank opposite the fort. I'm assuming he's in the water. A counter-swirl would be a current of water that's spinning in the opposite direction. "Distinctness" is clarity; it means the sound was very clear and stood out from the other sounds.
