There is much overlap between these two words although they have some different nuances.
Love implies affection. Only 'love' is used in romance, although it can also apply to family, friends, even objects. It is often used as a stronger version of 'to like', as in "I love cake. I love movies."
Adore has a religious use where it means to worship. Botticelli's painting Adoration of the Christ Child is an example. In secular use, it thus implies more admiration than affection. That said, it is also used as a stronger form of 'to like'. "I adore Alphonso Cuarón's movies. I adore everything Armani."
Both words are trivialized by their overuse.
You asked about the differences so I have tried to highlight them, but in most contexts they are interchangeable.
