As a general rule, you should put 'often' before the verb. Your first example is correct. Your second example sounds unnatural.
NB if the verb has several parts, put it before the main part ie
We often watch movies.
We don't often watch movies
We haven't often watched movies.

Both are acceptable, but the first is more common.
