Can I say ' conceive A as B'? Or must I say 'conceive of A as B'?

"conceive of A as B" sounds better to me but "conceive A as B" is also possible though I think the meaning would not be the same. It would be easier to give a more certain answer if you would provide a concrete example. Can you provide some sample sentences illustrating the contexts in which you are planning to use this expression?
