what does "conveniently" mean in the following sentence?
Though the transition from one age to another was gradual and by means abrupt ,the period was conventiently dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 till the dicovery of America by Columbus in 1492.
Which word shall I use to substitute it?

Here, the word 'Conveniently' (NOT Conventiently) means 'Suitably'.

This word means, to me, that this date may not be exact/precise, but a group of individuals knowledgeable on the subject has agreed (at or near this point in time) that this is the most probable date. I would substitute the words circa, approximately, or about - depending on the context.
Hope this helped,
Nick
