Yes, Germans unconsciously use the correct article without effort. It just a matter of practice. As a foreigner, if you choose the wrong article, in most cases you will be understood without problems and nobody will mind. However, it sounds "wrong" and it will leave a bad impression e.g. when applying for job.

Die Artikel sind in gesprochener Sprache genauso wichtig wie in geschriebenem Deutsch.
