bole and tree-trunk: are there differences in meaning or context ? Thank you

Yes, absolutely. 'Bole' is only used by botanists and other specialists. The word doesn't exist in everyday English, and I would guess that 90+ per cent of native speakers have never heard of the word. Tree-trunk is the normal word to use.
