'In advance' means 'beforehand'. You say 'thanks in advance' when your asking someone for help. You use it to say thank you to someone for something before they do it. It's out of place if you're not asking for help.
'Thank you in advance' sounds very formal. In business you want to be professional but friendly, so 'thanks in advance' works better. You would never use it in very informal contexts though.
