go weightlifting or do weightlifting?
There is a rule in Solutions Oxford book, that you have to use "go" with all the sports that end in -ing: go cycling, go surfing, and (!) go weightlifting.
Go weightlifting doesn't sound naturally to me, I'd rather say do weightlifting. But there is a rule!
I've just found in the test booklet " A lot of people at my gym DO weightlifting". And this is the only correct answer in the keys. The book contradicts itself.
So which variant is correct? May be, both of them?
Thanks in advance!

You would say "do weightlifting" if you're talking about weightlifting as an activity. If you're talking about weightlifting as an action then you'd want to say "go weightlifting".

you are correct to be puzzled by this. "I do weightlifting" is perfectly acceptable and used often, however if the person is asked about times he might say "I go weightlifting twice a week" to show what his movements are.
