Actually there are many accent variations in the US. I think that most people are only aware of the very few which are shown through social media, films and music. This 20 min video shows a few of the audible and visual differences between basic British and American English.

The British accent is made up of many dialects (patois). The American accents are more similar, with a few exceptions. Plus the Americans do not speak trhe English.
