Get the gist/point What's the difference between 'get the gist' and 'get the point'? If there is none which one do you prefer?

They aren't quite the same. The gist means the general idea. The point means the key idea.

They mean basically the same thing. You could use "point" for something more specific and "gist" for something more general, something more conceptual. But in general, they are interchangeable. I use both, based on that very minor difference in feeling I mentioned above.
