It's very in Back in the 90's there was an expression which used to describe a fashionable item: it's very in, this hat is so in, this song is in at school etc. Is this expression still valid? Do people still use the word in to describe a popular thing??

Yes, it's still used, as well as "out" to describe the opposite.
