Comment dit-on ou Comment dites-vous?
I have heard both so I wonder which one is more appropriate if you are asking for help with your French? Also what is the "on" all about?

"Comment dit-on" is more indirect, it literally translates to "how would one say" where as "comment dites-vous" is "how do you say" which is more direct, and also more formal. They both mean the same thing, choosing which one is more of a stylistic choice.
Hope this helps :)
