legal / lawful / legitimate Could you explain the differences between legal / lawful / legitimate? Kind of hard to choose what to use in contexts.

Legal and Lawful are exactly the same thing. But "legal" is the more commonly used word. Legitimate usually does not have reference to the law. It means something is real, sound, honest. "That team is a legitimate contender for the championship."
