Работать means to work, as in doing your job. Сработать can be used in such sentences as "Сигнализация сработала" (The alarm was triggered). So in this case, something has been put into action.

Сработать can also be used in such a context where your plan or idea or something else worked out really well, that is to say, it was successful. For example, Этот план сработал (This plan worked out).
