What's the difference between "Cominciare" and "Iniziare"in Italian?

There is no difference at all, they both can be transitive or intransitive, and they mean the same thing:
La lezione inizia/la lezione comincia (lesson begins)
Inizio a scrivere/comincio a scrivere (I start to write)

'cominciare' ed 'iniziare' are synonyms, but with 'iniziare' the subject of the sentence must be animated, while with 'cominciare' the subject of the sentence must be inanimate:
-il professore inizia la lezione alle 16;
-la lezione comincia alle 16.
