What are misericords?
I translate a book guide from Westminster Abbey. It has a lot of archaic words. How do you think in this sentance:
"The undersides of the seats have carved decorations called misericords ( from the Latin word for 'mercy')."
misericords mean seats for monks or decoration of seats?
Thank you very much.I think, there are seats. Am I right? The next sentance:
They gave some support to the monks when they stood during long services, and even though the misericords were generally hidden from view, the carvings are very elaborate.
