How to understand "facility" in this sentence?
The US unit produced a “modest loss” in the first half mainly due to high start-up costs at a facility in Rhode Island, but Mr Coveney said the expectation was that it would be profitable in the second half.

"Facility" is vaguely similar in meaning to "plant" or "factory." It suggests a big place with buildings, machinery, and people who are able to accomplish some specific task. A company's "facilities" would mean all of the places where it is able to do things and produce things.
Here are some examples of use:
The university has a nanotechnology facility.
Our machine shop has the facilities for building prototypes in both ferrous and nonferrous metals.
"The first big step we’ve taken is that we’ve just hired a new facilities manager, by the name of Rob Masek. He starts on March 11th, and is geared up to assess the needs of our facility, clean up the shops and reorganize them."

It would be a location or branch of the company. It could be an office or a manufacturing plant... you can't tell from the context here.
