什麼鬼 is a very Taiwanese expression. I have never actually heard any of my friends from China say this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMIPHbGV2f0 the host in this video says "什麼鬼" at 4:45 in this video. It's a bit like saying "Whaaa? What (the hell) is that?", but it isn't as rude as the English equivalent.
