Empezar is more like "To start" Comenzar is more like "To begin" So that means they are synonyms and you can use whichever you want without any problem.

Native speaker here. I don't believe there are any significant differences and I am quite confident they can be used interchangeably. Both of course meaning, "to begin", or "to commence".
