"managing, director"'s comma
May anyone tell me why they put a comma between "managing" and "director" in the following sentence? Isn't it more correct to say "... managing director of ..." without comma? Or does the comma do a specific function here?

"The processing of the ultrahigh-temperature refractory metals, crucial to the nation's aerospace programs, is expected to make important progress in 1962, Allan Ray Putnam, managing, director of the American Society for Metals, said in an annual forecast."
