The verb 'stomach' has also meanings 'tolerate'. So, we can understand 'can tolerate'...

to 'stomach' something is referring to the idea of being able to digest something. In this case it is being used metaphorically. Example: "He couldn't stomach the idea of his true love marrying another man."
