What's the difference between "customer" and "patron"?

Sometimes, there is no difference. Both can be used to refer to people who come to a store or other business to buy something. But, patron can also mean somebody who provides financial support for something. For example, "Rockefeller [a rich man] was one of the leading patrons of the symphony orchestra in New York. He donated over $1 million each year to them."
