第一回 望成名学究训顽儿 讲制艺乡绅勖后进 >
Chapter one: Expecting his success in scholarship and the future official career , the tutor lectures the stupid juvenile; talking about the eight-part essay, the country gentleman urges his son to work hard.
The Chinese is written in a classical style.
学究: a pedant; a private tutor in the old times
训:lecture,instruct
玩:顽劣,愚顽 ignorant and stubborn
制艺:a peculiar eight-part essay in old-time China by which the intelligentsia entered the officialdom. 制,( originally a specifically styled) writing. 艺,the art of making such writing, and then 制艺 was basically used to denote this kind of writing ( 八股文)
勖:(old or literary)urge, encourage
后进:(old and here in the context)a juvenile, a member of the younger generation
