In those two sentences, the overall meaning is the basically the same. However, firstly, "host" is both a verb and a noun without changing form. Verb: "I like to host parties on the weekends." Noun: "She was an excellent host at yesterday's dinner." Host can also be used informally. For example, you can "host a party" or "host guests for dinner." Moderate, as a verb (MAH-der-ate), is more formal, and can also imply a less active role. One who moderates is a "moderator." When you "moderate a panel," you may be the one asking questions and guiding the discussion, but not necessarily contributing to the discussion yourself. Moderators may also oversee testing, so again they are not taking the test, but just watching others do it and making sure things go according to plan. It is important to note "moderate" also has an adjective form with a different pronunciation. Moderate as an adjective (mah-der-IT) essentially means something is not extreme, or is of medium or average quality. Note that the adjective form of "moderate" does have a passive connotation, so it in this way relates to the verb form of the same spelling. Verb: MAH-der-ate. Noun: MAH-der-ate-er. Adjective: mah-der-IT Summary: The verb "host" is often less formal and more flexible in meaning; the verb "moderate" is more formal and restricted in meaning. Hope this helps! ^_^

In the original sense, to host meant to provide lodging and meals. Today, it can mean to provide a meeting place and the necessary equipment (microphones, projection screens). Today, one meaning of to moderate is to direct the activities of a meeting or debate. Many people use them interchangeably, but that's just sloppiness. Here's an example: - The xyz political party will host a fundraiser dinner and debate in New York in October. Famous journalist Mr. A will moderate a discussion about the future of the country and the future of the xyz political party. Several well-known journalists, academics, and business leaders will participate in the discussion.
