A smile played on one's lips ?
Hello,
I came across this expression "a smile played on his lips," and I am wondering what's the meaning of 'play' here...?
Is it drawn, appear, or something else?
Thanks in advance

It would be helpful to have more context, but it is saying a smile "began to appear on his lips".
