Alive= adjective=existing, continuing, under discussion; eg The topic of euthanasia is still very much alive today.
life= noun=capacity for growth, duration of a thing's existence/ability to function, the manner of one's existence, eg He migrated overseas to start a new life
live=verb=to be or remain alive eg The doctors thought that he would live to be a hundred.
live=adjective=full of energy, fully operational, not obsolete. eg, 'Watch out, that wire's still live!'
live= adverb= in order to make a live broadcast eg 'We cross live now to our reporter.'

"Can anyone explain TO me..." ;) (that horrible "to" again I know :))
I am alive - I am living/breathing! (alive=adjective)
I want to live forever! - I want to carry on being alive/breathing forever! (live=verb)
I want to have a long life - I want the time that I am alive/breathing to be long! (life = noun)

do you LIVE to have a good LIFE? then you should thank God as you are still ALIVE!
one thing: "LIVE" is pronounced in two ways: "liv" (pronounced as spelled), "lIv" (pronounced as 'layv') as the former is pronounced when used as verb and the latter when used as adj. or adv.
