In my circles, "set up" would be more common.

Yes, ... but, ... If you are one of those people who go camping with all the fancy extras, chairs, tables, bar, fridge, bean chairs, camp beds, pillows, and so on, then, "set up a tent" could mean much more than just put the tent up.
