What does "fly" mean in this sentence "It was now lunch time and they were all sitting under the double green fly of the dining tent pretending that nothing had happened." I've been looking it up but none of the explanations that i've found really works Thank you

A "fly" in this sentance is the outer cover or layer of a tent.

The fly of a tent is a part that opens out, usually in a triangle. It can act as a door, or just be an area beyond the tent, if tied up. It can also be used to refer to a "tent" made only of a single piece help above you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_(tent) has some images that are all fly & no real tent.
