Hope do I type Chinese characters? I've been trying to find out how to type Chinese characters. Some websites recommend downloading third party software to translate it to characters while you are typing the words in pinyin. Is this what most people in China do? If so which options do you recommend to download? It also said somewhere that you can change the settings to Chinese in a way that allows you to handwrite characters with the mouse. Do you think this would be better if I am trying to learn and remember them?

You can try Google Input Tools online: https://www.google.com/intl/en/inputtools/try/

Don't download anything, just add Chinese to your Languages in Windows if you use Windows. You can draw using the mouse if you use ther Translate Google website, no need to download and install anything.

You can change your keyboard settings and add a Chinese (pinyin) keyboard. You shouldn't need to download any third party programs.

When you've changed your keyboard, you can press the keyboard icon to change the current language settings. This will allow you to type in pinyin.

How it works is you type pinyin, e.g. nihao 你好, it will be automatically translated to the chinese characters corresponding to the pinyin you just type.

This works both on IOS or Windows.
