In (the) childhood ? He was an open minded boy in the childhood. Do we need to use ‘the’ with childhood/adulthood etc?

No, there shouldn't be a 'the'. Without an article, it' a fixed adverbial phrase referring in general terms to a human life period: 'in childhood' (like 'in infancy' or 'in old age', which are similar grammatically to 'at work' or 'by night'). Otherwise, you could say 'in his childhood' or 'during his childhood', referring particularly to this person.
