In German the words "Mann" und "Frau" are often used to describe a husband or wife. For example "er ist mein Mann" would be "he is my husband." This may seem like it could lead to misunderstanding but "er ist ein Mann" would just mean "he is a man."
The same thing happens with girlfriend/boyfriend. "Sie ist meine Freundin" = "she is my girlfriend" and "Sie ist eine Freundin" = "she is a (female) friend."
If you want to be very clear you can use "Ehemann" and "Ehefrau" ("die Ehe"="the marriage") but in my experience germans more often just use "Mann" and "Frau" using "my" and "a" to distinguish.
I hope that helps
