What is the 'familiar' meaning as a noun ? Hi, everyone Well, while I watching the "V For Vendetta" movie I realized that the familiar word using as a NOUN not as ADJECTIVE and I haven't any problem with it as a adjective since It's basically mean "well known", but It getting me confused when I saw it in the movie. Here is the sentence : "the security of the familiar" So, my question is what is "the familiar" really mean here ? I have looked at the Longman dictionary and I can't find the right meaning, but I have a guess that It's probably mean "something that we known it very well". Is that right ? Thank you for helping me.

"Something which we have known very well" is a pretty good definition of "the familiar." Another might be "that which is familiar." "The security of the familiar" means the safety and and easiness of what we already know and are used to.

As Evelyn says your definition is basically correct. I believe that you can't find a definition for a noun that matches yours is that it is not a noun in the example sentence. I think it is an adjective, and the noun is omitted or implied. We do this with some adjectives. For example: the first, the next, the last, the everyday In these cases the context will help you understand what is being implied/omitted

Um familiar pode ser alguém que pertence a sua família, ou alguém ou algo que é conhecido por você. Exemplo quando é alguém pertencente a sua família: "um familiar meu faleceu esta noite" ou seja, é um membro da sua família. Exemplo quando é alguém conhecido: "aquela pessoa me parece familiar" ou seja, eu acho que a conheço. Nunca assisti a este filme, então não conheço o contexto, mas você pode considerar como sendo a segurança de um membro da família, OU a segurança de alguém que você conheça.
