Do I have to use a preposition with "free of charge"? Hi friends, Do I have to use a preposition with "free of charge"? Out of the two options given below, which is the correct sentence? Do I need the preposition "for" in the following example? 1. This report was done free of charge. 2. This report was done for free of charge. Thanks in advance, Niwantha

The first one is correct. The second one, eliminate the "of charge," so that it reads: This report was done for free. "free of charge" or "for free" both sound fine, but "for free of charge" sounds unnatural.

No preposition, so the first choice.
