genuine liking,1 and 2
hi there.
1.whats meaning of "genuine liking" in this sentence?
2.whats gist of this sentence"Mistakes were made, feuds started, quarrels precipitated which
had to be settled and quenched with more patience and tact."
Such a method requires, above all else,
patience, tact, and genuine liking for the people. The last we
had, but we were not always successful in the first two.
Mistakes were made, feuds started, quarrels precipitated which
had to be settled and quenched with more patience and tact.

I would like to share my thoughts! I may not be exactly right here with my answer :)
a. 'Genuine liking' is probably referring to the writer being sincere to the people and really care about them, and not putting up a show of liking.
b. The writer is saying he and others were not so patient and tactful. Although they were sincere to the people, they were not very sensible in dealing with the people/situation which resulted in mistakes and fights. These issues could only be resolved by being calm and considerate of the people and not getting annoyed whatever be the situation.
In short, the writer should be more understanding of the people and put himself/herself in their shoes while using the so-called method mentioned in the para.

Basically it's a halfway apology for whatever happened. Halfway meaning expecting the other half, as in an apology from you.

Genuine liking means that you care deeply for someone or something. It is a real and honest love. This person wants to help because he/she has large compassion but he/she is aware that they should be more patient and use specific words so as not to cause misunderstandings.
