We call them "acronyms" (set of initials)...
eg : UNO (United Nations Organization )
MSF (Médecins sans Frontières)
NSF (National Science Foundation)
TGV ( Train à Grande Vitesse)
NYC (New York City)
OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries)
