what is the difference between "how about you ?"and "what about you?"?

"how about you?" is a little bit more formal
If I were talking to a teacher or a boss I would ask "how about you?"
When talking to friends or family I would use either "how about you?" or "what about you?"
The meaning is the same though.

You can use how about you into your friends when you wanna know about he/she opinion ..
