to vegetate = to be very lazy and inactive. It means "as active as a vegetable", hence the name. This verb also exists in French (végéter) ex: j'ai passé mon week-end à végéter devant la télévision (French) = I spent my week-end vegetating in front of the TV set (English).

It means to be passive or inactive. As a plant grows (vegetates), it is not moving or physically active. It just "sits there." :)
