"I was wondering..." is basically the same as "I wanted to know..." or "I was curious about..."
For example, if you are lost in New York City and you would like to ask someone how to get to the Statue of Liberty, you can say to them "I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the Statue of Liberty."

It's just another way of saying "I was thinking about why.........."
