"to bring (someone) up to speed" is a familiar expression.
"I brought him up to speed"
means
"I told them all that happened recently so that his knowledge is current".
a synonym is: "To be brought up to date"
the idea is that you 'bring him' from the past to the present by telling him what he has missed.
